Swedish Firesteel - Scout Model, Red Handle customer reviews:

Sweet little pocket starter Love this little pocket fire-starter. In the movies, or on shows like Survivorman, Les Stroud makes it seem so easy to start a fire. Well he's an expert survival man, but this handy little pocket-sized flint/steel starter makes fire-starting almost a breeze.
If you're in windy conditions, where matches or traditional methods fail, this thing comes through. The key to getting this to work effectively, is applying lots of pressure as you stroke the steel piece against the rod. This creates about 5 to 10 times the amount of sparks, which instead of evaporating into thin air, actually fall down onto your tinder, and light your fire.
I recommend practicing a few times to understand the importance of applying pressure like I mentioned. After all, you can only use it 15 thousand times! Easy 5 stars.
Easy I've never used a firesteel and got it to spark right up and light a cotton ball on fire within a minute or two. You do have to rub the coating off of it first though. That's not enough to stop a five star rating though. :)
Wow This thing is actually dangerous. I think it is more dangerous than matches. I love it. I can start a fire with two strikes. Just wonderful.
Nice flint! Great product. Worked wet and dry. Obviously if your tinder is wet you're going to have a heck of a time. Recommend the maya dust or other tinders.
Not as big as 4th of July, but lots of sparks nonetheless This + dryer lint = Instant flame.
I ditched the cruddy lanyeard and replaced it with a longer piece of paracord.
I would have given 5 stars had they just not included the cheap lanyard in the first place. The clip came undone when I was playing around with it after opening the package and after that, it had to go.
